Planning an extended East Africa road trip? Whether you’re driving from Nairobi to Victoria Falls or exploring Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania in one loop, crossing borders on a 4x4 overland trip is one of the most important parts of the journey to get right.

At Black Leopard 4x4 Hire, we’ve supported hundreds of travelers in navigating African borders with ease. Here are our top five tips to ensure your overland adventure goes smoothly.

1. Get Your Documents in Order Before You Travel

Successful border crossings in Africa start with the right documents. Here’s what you’ll typically need at each international crossing:

  • Passport with at least 6 months of validity

  • Visa (either eVisa or visa-on-arrival depending on the country) – double check that the visa duration written in your passport matches what you requested. It’s not uncommon for border officials to issue shorter stays than stated, which can result in fines if unnoticed.

  • International Driving Permit (required in some countries)

  • Vehicle registration documents (provided by Black Leopard)

  • Car insurance and COMESA Yellow Card (also included)

  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (for entering Tanzania from Kenya) - this will cost $50 if you don't have it prior to arriving at the border

Black Leopard provides guidance on visa requirements and border recommendations during handover. If you'd like assistance with advance visa arrangements, our trusted travel planning partner Africa Off Track can help.

2. Understand the Carnet de Passage

The Carnet de Passage en Douane (CPD) is an international customs document that functions like a passport for your vehicle. It ensures that your vehicle is temporarily imported and will not remain in the country.

All Black Leopard 4x4s are issued with a valid Carnet de Passage, fully prepared for multi-country travel across East and Southern Africa. This eliminates the need to handle complicated import/export paperwork.

At the border:

  • Customs officers will stamp the Carnet on entry and exit

  • In some cases, a copy may be requested

  • This document must be kept safe throughout your journey

Our vehicles are cleared for cross-border travel across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and beyond.

3. Expect Vehicle Inspections

At most African borders, you will pass through immigration and customs. Here's what to expect on the vehicle side:

  • Officials may check your VIN and plate number match your documents.

  • You may be asked to unpack your main luggage and have it scanned through a machine.

  • A visual inspection of the vehicle may follow, with questions about your planned route.

  • You may be required to pay a road toll, carbon tax, or insurance fee, depending on the country.

Black Leopard supplies a printed border checklist with every hire, outlining exactly what to expect at each crossing.

4. Carry Cash, Copies and Patience

Border experiences in Africa vary depending on time of day, country, and traffic. Some are fast and efficient, others can be slow and disorganised. Preparation makes a difference.

We recommend carrying:

  • US dollars and local currency for fees

  • Printed copies of your key documents (passport, visa, insurance, Carnet)

  • Food, water, and flexibility in your schedule

All necessary vehicle documents are supplied in a folder in your vehicle, so you're always ready when asked.

5. Choose the Right Border Posts

Not all African borders are created equal. Some are quick and efficient, while others are known for long queues or inconsistent processes. Choosing the right crossing can save hours of frustration and help you stick to your itinerary.

Here are some of our preferred border posts for overland travellers:

  • Kenya–Uganda: Busia – A popular and reliable crossing with good infrastructure

  • Uganda–Rwanda: Cyanika – Quieter and more scenic than Gatuna, with less traffic

  • Rwanda–Tanzania: Rusumo – Streamlined for overlanders with clear vehicle lanes

  • Kenya–Tanzania: Namanga – The most commonly used post with solid road access and generally smooth processing for vehicles

  • Tanzania–Zambia: Tunduma – Recently modernised and among the more organised crossings

  • Zambia–Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls or Kazungula – Efficient and scenic, with access to major routes and attractions

Each of these posts is suitable for travellers in fully prepped 4x4s with the correct documentation. If you’re unsure which to choose, we’re always happy to help you plan your route and advise on real-time updates.
