PLANNING YOUR ADVENTURE

Planning Your Cape Town to Nairobi Road Trip

06_best_time_to_travel.png

Best Time to Travel:
May to September is generally a rewarding period for this Cape Town to Nairobi overland adventure, with drier conditions across many of Southern Africa's major wildlife destinations. June to August can offer excellent game viewing, although desert nights may be cold and Cape Town experiences winter rainfall. Conditions vary considerably across eight countries, so the ideal departure date depends on your route, wildlife interests and preferred travel conditions.

07_accommodation.png

Accommodation:
Enjoy a flexible combination of wilderness camping, established campsites and optional lodges throughout the journey. From remote safari camps in Zambia and Tanzania to relaxed lakeside accommodation on Lake Malawi, this route offers plenty of variety. Popular national park campsites should be booked in advance.

Border Crossings:
This expedition travels through eight countries, crossing from South Africa into Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya. Allow time for immigration, vehicle documentation, temporary import procedures, insurance and applicable road fees. Requirements vary by nationality, vehicle registration and border crossing, so all arrangements must be confirmed before departure.

Vehicle & Equipment:
A reliable, fully equipped 4x4 is essential for this long-distance African expedition. Black Leopard's safari-ready vehicles are equipped with full camping gear, refrigeration, recovery equipment and practical storage. Good tyres, navigation, adequate fuel and water supplies, and careful vehicle preparation are particularly important for Namibia's remote roads and Botswana's sandy safari tracks.

Good to Know:
This is an ambitious one-way African overland expedition, best enjoyed over approximately seven to nine weeks. Allow additional transit nights between major destinations, particularly across Namibia, Zambia and Tanzania. Some remote safari tracks require confident 4x4 driving, and seasonal conditions may affect access. Plan realistic daily distances, allow flexibility for border crossings and avoid driving after dark.
